Oh what a night!

A peek into the lives of the rich and famous today with Tom's pictures from his night at the Brian Lara benefit, meeting not only the great man but also various other cricketing legends.

I'm full of admiration since I've personally never wanted to meet my own idols for fear of disappointment. There's the disappointment of being goofy and dumbstruck in the presence of greatness, as experienced when I had the chance to meet Roy Harper after a gig one year. (Mum went in and had a long chat with him and had no similar bashfulness about fan-dom, coming away having begged a broken guitar string.)

Then there's the disappointment of finding out that your idols are maybe not that memorable to meet. This one applies mostly to footballers, and on a couple of occasions I've politely declined the offer of a visit to post-match drinks at Bramall Lane (ironically from a very clever and accomplished ex-footballing friend, but I'm not going to chance it with the Norfolk boys).

Much better to enjoy the fantasy, I say. So, nice one Tom for a massive gamble. Now come on, tell us the truth - how much conversation practice did you do in front of the mirror?

Oscar's Day Out

Xmas in Wales

Just uploaded to Flickr, a few snaps of Xmas Day at Marloes Sands. We've hired the youth hostel there for the last 3 years; it's a farmhouse in a fantastic location about 100m from the cliff top on the very last bit of south-west Wales. More footage to come when I've worked out how to upload from my new camcorder, an amazing birthday present from my family.

Bruno the Bear

A new addition to the office wall (2nd from the right) is Bruno the Bear's front-page spread in Munich's Abendzeitung last June.

This was my Secret Santa gift from Tom, composed from a newspaper we saw in Germany during the World Cup while Bruno rampaged through the Southern Tirol causing new havoc on daily basis. On this particular day the paper describes how he ate 12 kilos of honey and murdered two guinea pigs before having a kip in front of a police station.

Most of the other pictures on the wall are also souvenirs of places visited. (Left to Right) A Spanish tabloid with a picture of the bullfight we watched the night before in Seville in 1991. The matador is getting tossed in the air on the end of the bull's horns, at which point Jo cheered the beast and upset lots of Spaniards. Next, a sign from a shop window in Sicily which says 'Facts are needed against the Mafia'. Tellingly, the shop - in Catania, where we lived in 1992 - was boarded up. Finally, to Bruno's right, a road sign from Route 66 in Arizona during our drive from San Francisco to Denver in 1996.

Let's be huggin' you

Birthday boy Tom with drunken domestic goddess Delia on his arm, sharing a few bottles of vodka at the Capital Canaries Annual General Meeting in London last night. Nick also reports that, on a day of swirling Ashton transfer rumour, the Carrow Road big cheeses retreated from the flesh-pressing later for an animated and serious discussion in the corner. What could it mean?
